The Frenchman Louis Braille went blind at the age of 3 when he stabbed himself in the face with an awl. When he was only 15, he invented the writing system for blind people that is named after him. Braille is really a kind of alphabet for blind people: the letters & symbols are pressed into the paper so that you can feel small raised dots. Fingertips can ‘read’ them. Braille is still used by and for blind people all over the world.
