The first ice lolly, the ‘Epsicle’, later called the ‘popsicle’, was invented by the American Frank Epperson from San Francisco. When he was 9 years old, he found some leftover lemonade in a forgotten glass that had frozen solid around the stirring stick after a frosty night in the garden. He tasted it and found that it was actually quite nice. The memory stayed with him, and in 1924 the grown-up Epperson began selling his discovery.
The Epsicle was successfully promoted and patented as a ‘frozen soft drink on a stick’. In the early 1950s the ice lolly was joined by the choc ice on a stick. The stick, now wrapped in ice cream and coated with a layer of chocolate, would compete with the water ice lolly and become popular all over the world as a cold treat.
